During the hot months of Summer, my mind will occasionally drift back to my days on a race team. There’s nothing like being on the asphalt for the day, loud engines, weird smells, head on a swivel, the whole experience. Today, I’m reminded of the times I served as a Tire Specialist on the #1 Pennzoil sponsored Chevrolet for driver J.P. Morgan. This was immediately following Ricky Hendrick’s ascension into the NASCAR Busch Grand National series.
Some of Ricky’s crew were given an opportunity to stay with him as he moved up a level in NASCAR, some weren’t. For those of us who could go to the next level, the decision was a hard one. For me, as much as I loved Ricky, I knew Papa Joe needed me more, so I stayed behind. Some times I wonder what would’ve happened if I would’ve taken that jump with Ricky, but one thing is for sure, I’m happy I didn’t miss a single minute with Pop!
The folks with both Lance Moss Racing and J&R Racing filled our lack of racing, and kept a few of us busy on weekends for the next few years, so it all worked out okay I guess. Regardless, I sure do miss those times.
